Snapchat joins other popular platforms in fight against 'AI slop'

Image
Image source, Reuters Image caption, Snapchat is trying to tamp down on AI-generated videos. By Kali Hays Technology reporter Published 12 minutes ago Snapchat has joined the likes of YouTube, LinkedIn and Substack in a growing effort to combat fake writing, images and videos that are entirely created by artificial intelligence (AI) tools. Such content, commonly called " AI slop ", has proliferated online as the tech industry has raced to create a greater number of easier to use generative AI tools that can create anything from essays to realistic videos . Snap, the parent company of Snapchat, said on Friday that the platform would stop recommending "wholly AI-generated videos" in its popular Spotlight feed in favour of "authentic, human-made content." Over the past two weeks, YouTube, LinkedIn and Substack have unveiled similar strategies. Snap did not go so far as to try and prohibit all AI-generated content from Snapchat. The platform offers its own AI...

How Leopold Aschenbrenner built a $45 billion AI hedge fund — and lost most of it in days

Image
Two years ago, Leopold Aschenbrenner argued he was one of few people in the world who saw the future clearly. In a sprawling, 165-page essay that became required reading in Silicon Valley, the former OpenAI researcher positioned himself as a kind of prophet for the coming age of artificial super intelligence. But this week, the limits of Aschenbrenner's vision were on display when the AI-themed hedge fund he runs named Situational Awareness, also the title of his viral June 2024 manifesto ran into the harsh reality of tumbling semiconductor stocks and Wall Street margin calls. At its peak earlier this month, his fund sat atop $45 billion in assets. By Thursday, however, after being forced to offload all of his leveraged stock bets including hard-hit names like SK Hynix and CoreWeave to Ken Griffin's Citadel at a discount, the fund's holdings plunged to around $10 billion, according to people with knowledge of the situation. The story of Aschenbrenner's meteoric rise...

AI firms must answer for rogue bots, says boss of hacked company

Image
Image source, Getty By Joe Tidy Cyber correspondent, BBC World Service Published 59 minutes ago The boss of one of the companies recently hacked by out-of-control artificial intelligence (AI) says bot makers must be accountable for cyber attacks carried out by their creations. Clement Delangue's company Hugging Face was breached by a rogue OpenAI bot that broke out of a test environment and autonomously attacked his firm earlier this month. Hugging Face had to rebuild around a third of its IT network after the unprecedented incident. He told CNN his company will not be taking legal action against OpenAI as it is a small start-up but says these types of hacks are illegal and should remain so. "Everyone has to remember that a cyber attack is a crime and it is illegal," he said. Delangue said he hopes that legal frameworks are maintained to recognise this and to make sure that the companies that make mistakes leading to the hacks are "accountable." Delangue said h...

BP puts North Sea business up for sale

Image
Image source, WPA Pool By Shanaz Musafer and Claire Diamond , BBC News Published 31 July 2026, 08:48 BST Updated 42 minutes ago BP has said it is putting its North Sea business up for sale in a move that would end 60 years of production in the region by the oil giant. The decision follows a review of BP's operations as it seeks to slim down the group. Its North Sea business has five production hubs - two in the central North Sea and three west of Shetland - and employs about 1,100 people. Earlier this week, Prime Minister Andy Burnham said he told US President Donald Trump he would take a "pragmatic approach" to the issue of North Sea oil and gas. Trump, some trade unions, industry figures and some Labour MPs all back increased drilling in the North Sea. "The UK has been our home for more than 100 years and will continue to play an important role in our future," BP chief executive Meg O'Neill said. "We're proud of the jobs we create, the contributi...

Passenger on British Airways mayday flight describes fear and shout of 'I don't want to die'

Image source, Edward Killiwick Image caption, Edward said there were several fire trucks on the tarmac when the plane landed By Emer Moreau , Business reporter and Emma Vardy , Correspondent Published 49 minutes ago A passenger on a British Airways flight that issued a distress call on approach to Heathrow Airport earlier this month has described the rising fear in the cabin and a lack of information from the crew. Edward Killiwick had been travelling back from a friend's birthday party with his partner Julie, on the flight from Dusseldorf in Germany on 6 July. He said passengers were told that the landing had been aborted, and then he felt a "very violent manoeuvre" and "did think we could crash". He and his partner had to comfort a woman who "completely lost it and started screaming, 'I don't want to die'". The flight landed safely, but the incident is being investigated with assistance from BA. The UK's Air Accidents Investigation B...

Exxon and Chevron profits surge on rising oil prices due to Iran war

Image
ExxonMobil and Chevron on Friday reported second-quarter profits that surged on rising oil prices due to the Iran war. Chevron's net income soared to $12 billion, a nearly 400% increase compared to $2.5 billion in the same period last year. Its adjusted earnings came in at $6.06 per share, 50 cents higher than Wall Street's estimates. "We're kind of firing on all cylinders, which is good, because the world needs it," CEO Mike Wirth told CNBC's Becky Quick. Wirth said the threat to oil supplies in the Middle East has expanded beyond the Strait of Hormuz at time when global inventories are falling. Iran's Houthi allies in Yemen have expanded the conflict to the Red Sea, which has become a crucial alternative route for Saudi Arabia's oil exports. "The situation is under stress and I'm afraid it's going to continue to do so," Wirth told CNBC. "We're tunning out of time. Every day that goes by, the situation gets more difficult....

How many Americans have no savings?

Image
How many Americans have no savings? Sarah C. Brady Contributor Wed, July 29, 2026 at 12:25 PM PDT 4 min read Americans have a savings crisis. Or more accurately, we have a crisis of under-saving. In 2026, about a third of U.S. adults have $0 saved for emergencies. People in this group often feel like they're just bad with money. However, you should keep in mind that we're all facing factors beyond our control. Between inflation, high medical costs, and challenges in the job market, many Americans are finding it difficult or even impossible to save money. How many Americans have no savings? It's difficult to say exactly how many Americans have $0 in savings, since different sources cite different figures. One survey from Empower found that 32% of respondents reported they had no emergency savings. And 39% said rising prices are the biggest roadblock to saving for a rainy day . Meanwhile, a Yahoo Finance and Marist poll put the number of Americans without savings higher; 35%...

A portfolio manager says investors are looking overseas as Magnificent Seven worries grow. Here are the stocks and sectors he favors

Image
Investors are becoming more willing to increase their exposure to international equities, as concerns over the dominance of the "Magnificent Seven" technology giants encourage diversification away from U.S. stocks, Janus Henderson Investors' Julian McManus told CNBC. "There's definitely a move to explore more outside the U.S.," the portfolio manager on Janus Henderson Investors' Global Alpha Equity Team said in an exclusive interview. The firm reported about $480 billion in assets under management as of March 31. The shift marks a stark contrast with two years ago, when U.S. financial advisers were more reluctant to consider overseas markets after a decade in which American stocks consistently outperformed international peers. The MSCI ACWI ex-US index has risen over 8% year-to-date, compared to the S&P 500's gains of 6.8%, data from LSEG showed. McManus said investors had become heavily concentrated in a handful of large-cap U.S. technology sto...
