Third Heathrow runway should only go ahead if airlines pay for cleaner flying, say advisers

Image
Image source, Getty Images By Matt McGrath Environment correspondent Published 3 hours ago Heathrow's third runway cannot be approved without changes to current climate policies, the government's advisers have said. The Climate Change Committee (CCC) , external said expansion can still go ahead but only if the aviation industry funds cleaner fuels and pays for machines that suck carbon dioxide out of the air. Making the industry pay could push up the cost of flying with a return trip to Alicante costing around 150 more by 2050, and a return to New York up 400 in today's prices, it said. Once built, the expanded airport would produce more carbon dioxide than any other single sector of the economy by 2050. Heathrow said expansion and climate goals were "not a choice" and it would deliver both. "Our advice today is clear - Heathrow expansion is not currently compatible with the UK's Net Zero target," said Nigel Topping, the CCC chair. "Government ...

By Kali Hays Technology reporter Published 15 September 2026 Updated 2 hours ago OpenAI boss Sam Altman thinks people should have more faith in his company and others like it to do the right thing when it comes to artificial intelligence (AI) development amid rising public concerns about all the risks. "The world should trust that we are going to do the right thing because it's the right thing and we feel the magnitude of this," Altman said on Tuesday during a conference in San Francisco. However, Altman noted that people were justified in their fears around AI, as the capability of the tools has progressed rapidly. "It doesn't take as much imagination as it used to for [us] to imagine how this could go wrong," he said. "I think the world is right to be afraid of this." Altman's comment...

Iran war has cost on average $246 million per day in its first five months, CBO finds

Image
The U.S. war with Iran cost the Pentagon an estimated $38.1 billion through Aug. 1 and could cost another $2 billion to $3 billion for each additional month of fighting, according to a report released Tuesday by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. More than half of the cost has come from replacing missiles and other munitions used during the conflict. Increased flying hours cost another $10.4 billion, while higher fuel prices added $2.7 billion, CBO estimated. The war has led fuel prices around the world to rise since President Donald Trump launched it Feb. 28. The war has also consumed as much as two-thirds of the nation's missile-defense interceptors since June 2025, largely as a result of the U.S. helping defend Israel against Iranian attacks, leaving the U.S. with reduced inventories for several years, CBO warned. "Rebuilding DoD's inventory of interceptors would probably take at least five years even if production was increased," CBO said in the report,...

Cars have become a huge burden for many people, with the average monthly payment for a new vehicle coming in at $770 in the first quarter of 2026 and the average payment for a used car totaling $531 (1). And that's just the base cost of ownership that doesn't even include the cost of gas, insurance or repairs. With such high prices, it shouldn't come as a surprise that over half of all drivers (58%) admitted in 2025 that they couldn't afford a car repair costing $1,000 or more (2). Saudi pipeline closure is a brief interruption that will last days, U.S. Energy Secretary tells CNBC

Image
Saudi Arabia's critical East-West crude oil pipeline will start operating again "very soon" after Iran-backed attacks forced its closure, U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright told CNBC in an interview Tuesday. "This will be a brief and temporary interruption," Wright told CNBC's Morgan Brennan at a meeting of G20 nations in Houston. "It will be measured in days." The Saudis closed the pipeline late last week after it sustained damage in drone attacks launched from Iraq. Iran-backed proxy groups were responsible for the strikes, Wright said. Riyadh has relied on the pipeline to shift crude oil exports to the Red Sea as the U.S. and Iran battle for control over the Strait of Hormuz. The Saudis are now shifting some oil exports back through Hormuz with U.S. military support while the pipeline is down, Wright said. U.S. crude oil prices have gained more than 5% this week to trade above $105 per barrel, as the market tries to assess how big a supply disr...

State pension likely to top £13,000 a year as UK wage growth slows to 3.9%

Image
Image source, Getty Images By Emer Moreau , Business reporter and Kevin Peachey , Cost of living correspondent Published 15 September 2026, 07:12 BST Updated 4 hours ago The state pension is expected to top 13,000 a year, reigniting the debate about its long-term affordability and generational fairness. The full, flat-rate state pension is expected to rise by 488 a year in April, based on the latest official earnings figure released on Tuesday. The so-called triple lock pension policy guarantees that the state pension will increase by either average wage growth, inflation or 2.5% - whichever is highest. Labour made a manifesto pledge to keep the triple lock until 2029, however economists have warned about the cost of the policy ahead of the Budget although pensioner groups say many people still face poverty in old age. 'Substantial' cost The triple lock was designed to ensure the value of the state pension was not overtaken by the increase in the cost of living or the incomes...

Will AI really destroy humanity? Pioneers who created the tech weigh in

Image
As researchers warn that AI could pose catastrophic risks, some of the pioneers who helped develop the technology are weighing in with additional warnings on the dangers of unfettered advances in capability. A series of stark AI safety warnings has emerged over the past week, with researchers from major AI labs like Anthropic, OpenAI and Google DeepMind all sounding the alarm about potentially catastrophic risks from developing the technology. AI bosses including Sam Altman, Dario Amodei, Demis Hassabis and Elon Musk have shown rare agreement in calling for a slowdown and regulatory oversight. Meanwhile, concerns have also intensified debate in Washington. While some members of Congress from both Democratic and Republican parties have advocated for bills to check the progress of AI, U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday raged against growing calls for AI regulation. But what do the people who helped create AI think of the existential risks many are currently building the technology to...

U.S. confirms for first time it has weapons deployed in space

Image
The U.S. said for the first time Monday that the Space Force has deployed weapons in orbit. U.S. Air Force Secretary Troy Meink told the Air and Space Cyber Conference that the U.S. has "on-orbit space control weapons," as he outlined a broader push to modernize the Air Force and Space Force in response to advances by U.S. adversaries, AI, and the growing use of autonomous weapons. He did not specify what kind of weapons in space had been deployed, or when, according to the official Air Force account . "It's a strategic consideration to not disclose what exactly this is," Juliana Suess at the German Institute of International and Security Affairs and an expert in space security told CNBC. The capability of the weaponry could range from reversible interference, such as jamming, to kinetic, permanently destructive effects, she said. "This could be anything. The only thing that we know is that it is based in space, so this is not a sort of missile based on Ea...

Billionaire Ray Dalio warned last week that the U.S. is heading for a major debt crisis, likening the nation to a person on the verge of a heart attack. The Bridgewater Associates founder wrote in an August 21 LinkedIn post (1) that a $4 billion U.S. debt buyback (2), combined with rising bond yields (3), a weak dollar and a Japanese sell-off of U.S. bond holdings all point to a potential government debt crisis, which can result in "the equivalent of an economic heart attack that comes when the constriction of debt-financed spending shuts down the normal flow of the economic circulatory system." Treasury yields are hovering above a critical threshold. Here's what it means for stocks

Image
Treasury yields continued to rise sharply across the curve on Tuesday, sending the yield on the benchmark 10-year note above the closely watched 5% level. The 10-year Treasury yield added 7 basis points to 5.029% by 5 a.m. ET, while yields elsewhere on the curve rose roughly 4 to 6 basis points. Yields on the 20-year and 30-year Treasurys were last seen at 5.434% and 5.391%, respectively. U.S. Treasury yields Global yields followed Treasury yields higher, with government borrowing costs rising in Japan, Germany, the U.K., France, and elsewhere. Bond yields and prices move in opposite directions, with 1 basis point equating to 0.01 percentage point. While the moves in the bond market fueled questions about what's in store for the Federal Reserve's two-day September meeting which begins Tuesday they also raised concerns about the outlook for global equities. Sovereign bond yields influence borrowing costs not just for the governments that issue them, but also for consumers and ...
