Russia ‘truly’ appreciates U.S. invite to G20 summit — but hasn't decided if Putin will go

Image
Russia has welcomed the U.S. government's invitation for President Vladimir Putin to attend a G20 summit in Florida later this year, saying it "truly" appreciates the offer, but has not yet decided whether to accept it. The invite stoked outcry in Europe, where governments have been rearming since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said he feared Russia would view it as "encouragement to continue its aggressive policies," while the European Union's foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, said it was "really very, very hard to understand this treatment" of Putin. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday said the White House had invited Putin to a G20 meeting in Miami in December, where he could potentially hold talks with U.S. President Donald Trump . "We think it is an opportunity for him to engage, not just with the president but with other world leaders. We hope that is an invitation he...

Judge lifts Trump ban on CNN, MS NOW, Politico from White House

Image
A federal judge on Thursday ordered White House access to journalists from CNN, MS Now and Politico to be temporarily restored, saying U.S. President Donald Trump 's media ban was likely unconstitutional. The ruling represents a victory for the three media outlets, who had argued the ban violated their First Amendment rights, and comes as Trump hosts Chinese President Xi Jinping for a high-stakes meeting . In his ruling, District Judge Tim Kelly said the three outlets should have their access immediately restored from the ban that the president had announced on Sept. 18 , rejecting a request by the Justice Department to delay it for at least two days. The judge was nominated by Trump to the federal bench in 2017. Kelly said the Trump administration must return, reinstate and restore the White House "hard pass" press credentials held by employees of the three outlets that had been revoked. The temporary restraining order remains in effect for 14 days, with Kelly noting th...

Trump Accounts could help lower-income families most. Few have signed up. Kendall Little Senior Writer, Credit Cards Tue, September 22, 2026 at 7:38 AM PDT 5 min read Trump Accounts, created under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, were designed to help families build wealth by helping kids invest early. But so far, many of the families who could benefit most are not participating, according to one recent study. Just 5% of low- to moderate-income families eligible for a 530A Trump Account have actually opened one, according to a study by the national nonprofit Commonwealth. The organization surveyed over 1,000 eligible parents living on low or moderate incomes following the program's July 4 launch. The Trump administration has said these accounts will "afford a generation of children the chance to experience the mi...

Global debt tops $365 trillion as economists sound alarm over 'vicious cycle'

Image
Ever-higher costs to service mounting debt loads pose a major risk to governments around the world, economists have warned. Global debt rose by $10 trillion in the first half of the year to top $365 trillion, according to research published by the Institute of International Finance on Wednesday. State debts are rising as yields on medium- and long-term government bonds issued by a slew of the world's biggest economies hit their highest levels in more than a decade including in the U.S. , Japan , France and the U.K . Rising yields reflect growing investor discomfort at rising interest rates, persistent energy cost pressures, tepid economic growth and high fiscal spending. The IIF highlighted the four major economies in particular as facing "persistently large deficits and rising interest expenses challenges long associated with debt-distressed emerging market sovereigns." The Washington-based group found that advanced economies paid over $3.3 trillion in interest on inter...

Switzerland keeps interest rates at 0% — but markets are betting it can’t avoid the global hiking cycle much longer

Image
Switzerland's central bank kept its key interest rate at 0% on Thursday, defying the tightening cycle that has begun among many of its major peers. But market watchers say it's only a matter of time before it's forced into raising rates. Thursday's decision marked a divergence from policy decisions by the banks of Switzerland's major trading partners: the European Central Bank, the U.S. Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan, which have all begun raising interest rates to ward off rising inflation The central banks of Canada and the U.K., also major trading partners, are expected to follow suit later this year. The unique Swiss economy has kept it somewhat insulated from the inflationary surge seen in neighboring nations and economic peers. In August, Switzerland's annual inflation rate ticked up to 0.8%, pushed higher due to rising gasoline, diesel and heating oil costs but it's a far cry from levels seen in the U.S., U.K. and euro zone. Their respect...

Lidl banned from selling copycat Birkenstock sandals, Dutch court rules

Image
Image source, Getty Images By Francisco Velasquez Business reporter , Reporting from New York Published 9 hours ago Lidl must stop selling copycat versions of Birkenstock's famous sandals in the Netherlands, a Dutch court has ruled. The discount supermarket chain faces a fine of 5,000 ( 4,200) per day if it fails to comply and must also hand over sales data to Birkenstock, according to the ruling. Lidl must also compensate Birkenstock and pay its legal fees, with the amount to be decided in separate court decisions. Birkenstock said the judgement sent a clear message that "copycats must not be allowed to free-ride on [our] creativity and innovation". The BBC has reached out to Lidl for comment. The ruling, which can still be appealed, means Lidl cannot sell its copycat versions of Birkenstock's Arizona, Madrid, Gizeh, Boston, and Florida models across the Netherlands, after the court found the discount grocer infringed on the brand's trademark "footbed desig...

Chinese authorities reportedly in possession of F-35 components in Hong Kong

Image
Chinese authorities are reportedly in possession of F-35 stealth fighter parts after components of the aircraft were "inexplicably diverted to Hong Kong." Shipping giant UPS was sending a cockpit canopy and weapons bay door to the U.S. from Australia in late May when it was diverted, Bloomberg reported on Thursday, citing sources. Both parts were coated with a radar absorbing material that enhances their stealth capabilities, the sources said, and it was not clear why the shipment was diverted to Hong Kong. On Tuesday, Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles told reporters Tuesday that Australia was aware of the shipment, and was working with the U.S. and Lockheed Martin to see how Canberra can assist in the investigation. Marles also said it was his understanding that no sensitive parts were in the missing shipment, according to CNN. Lockheed Martin, UPS and the Pentagon didn't immediately respond to requests for comment from CNBC. The F-35 is a fifth-generation stea...

They were labelled 'pervert glasses'. Will a camera-free version transform their image?

Image
By Zoe Kleinman , Technology editor and Luke Mintz , BBC News When Meta first launched its AI-powered smart glasses in 2023, in collaboration with the trendy sunglasses brand Ray-Ban, it unleashed a storm of controversy. There have been multiple reports of the devices being used to harass women and girls in particular , filming them without their consent, then sharing the footage. The image problem doesn't seem to have been cured by Meta's enlistment this summer of Kylie Jenner, Kim Kardashian's sister, as their prime model. The devices have been dubbed "pervert" or "creepy" glasses. In the UK, JD Wetherspoon pubs, a handful of major theatres, Comic-Con, some schools, and Faslane, home of the UK's nuclear submarines, have all chosen to ban them. On Thursday, Meta is unveiling a new version which does not contain a camera at all, called Ray-Ban Meta Audio. They will have the audio functions of the original glasses - including the ability to make phon...

America’s Asian allies want a Trump-Xi truce — but not at their expense

Image
America's Asian allies want U.S. President Donald Trump's meeting with Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping to ease tensions between the world's two largest economies. They don't want that stability to come at their expense. Ahead of Thursday's summit in Washington, the U.S. joined Japan and South Korea in reaffirming its "ironclad" defense commitments to both countries and opposing unilateral attempts to change the status quo across the Taiwan Strait. The statement came amid concerns that Trump could soften Washington's position on Taiwan or other regional security issues in return for concessions from Beijing on trade, or assistance over the war with Iran. "In general, U.S. allies and partners in the region do not want to see a breakthrough in U.S.-China relations that harms their national interests, but they also want to guard against a breakdown in U.S.-China ties that raises the risk of conflict in the region," said Jeremy Chan, senior analys...

U.S.-China trade truce extended for two months, Bessent says, as Xi begins state visit

Image
The U.S. and China have extended a truce to keep tariffs lower for longer and rare earths flowing, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Wednesday local time. He was speaking on Fox News, as Chinese President Xi Jinping landed in Washington, D.C. for a state visit through Friday. Xi and Trump agreed to a one-year trade truce at a meeting in South Korea last October. The deal, which was set to expire in November, will now be extended to Jan. 10, Bessent said. He added that Beijing needs to fulfill more deliverables. Ahead of this week's summit, many had expected the truce would be extended by six months or longer. Chinese state media did not immediately note Bessent's comments on the trade truce. Footage streamed on China's state broadcaster showed U.S. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump meeting Xi and First Lady of China Peng Liyuan at the foot of the Chinese leader's jet. The video did not show the U.S. and Chinese leaders shaking hands it foc...

Here's what happens to the economy when Treasury yields soar like they are now

Image
Soaring Treasury yields aren't just bad for the government and its $40 trillion debt. They also threaten to raise borrowing costs, hitting everyone from homeowners to credit card users, while providing limited relief to savers and potential benefits to banks. Government debt costs leaped higher Wednesday , the product of multiple factors including a fresh report showing higher inflation pressures, surging expectations for a Federal Reserve rate hike in October, and an auction for 5-year notes showing that Treasury demand was weak. Competition from hyperscaler debt issuance also is seen as an aggravating factor. Yields responded by jumping more than they have in nearly a year and a half, dating back to April 2025 when President Donald Trump first announced so-called reciprocal tariffs against U.S. trading partners. Recent market liquidity efforts pushed by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent have had no impact so far, with rates surging higher despite intensified buyback efforts on lo...

Bessent just picked the one wage measure still rising

Image
Bessent just picked the one wage measure still rising Tobi Opeyemi Amure Tue, September 22, 2026 at 12:47 PM PDT 6 min read Politicians have a favorite number. The trick is finding one that is true, flattering, and narrow enough that nobody checks what sits next to it. Wage data makes that easy. The government publishes dozens of pay measures every month, covering hourly and weekly pay, managers and rank-and-file staff, factory floors and restaurant kitchens, with many of them also adjusted for inflation. In a good year, most of those measures point in the same direction. In a rough year, they split apart, and whoever holds the microphone gets to choose which one you hear about. This has been a rough year for your grocery and gas budget. Gasoline costs 27.4% more than it did a year ago, and the Federal Reserve just raised interest rates for the first time since 2023. For most households, that combination adds up to a paycheck that buys a little less than it did last summer. So when Tr...

OpenAI and Anthropic CEOs push for AI cooperation at UN after Trump rebuffs 'globalist scheme' to control it

Image
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei addressed the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday and called for international coordination to address the potential risks posed by artificial intelligence . "In our history, there have been times where countries who compete and don't always like each other very much still come together for shared interests and the collective good in the face of a powerful new technology," Altman said. "We believe this must be one of those times" Earlier this month, Amodei rocked the tech sector by publishing a proposal to slow down the pace of AI development. Altman, in a rare sign of solidarity with his chief rival, publicly agreed with Amodei on the need to "pace the frontier." The safety practices at both companies have been under intense scrutiny after industry researchers warned about AI's growing potential to cause catastrophic harm . The executives' remarks on Wednesday came just one day aft...
