Intel, SK Hynix shares jump on report they're discussing U.S. memory chip manufacturing

Image
SK Hynix is in talks with Intel to manufacture its memory chips in the U.S. for the first time, Reuters reported Wednesday, sending shares of both companies higher in premarket trading. Intel rose 3.2% while SK Hynix's Nasdaq-listed shares were 2.6% higher. Intel and SK Hynix shares year-to-date. Under one scenario, SK Hynix would lease part of Intel's chipmaking facility in Ohio, Reuters reported, citing people familiar with the matter. Intel and SK Hynix could also form a joint venture with Intel and major cloud firms, Reuters said. SK Hynix could also look at other ways to structure the deal, the news agency reported. The talks are exploratory, and no decisions have been made, one of the sources told Reuters. Intel and SK Hynix did not immediately respond to CNBC's request for comment on the report. If a deal is struck, it would be a big win for Intel, which has been looking to gain marquee customers for its manufacturing, or foundry business, which is a key pillar of...

Why doomsday warnings are not the only threat to the AI juggernaut

Image
By Faisal Islam Economics editor There is an eerie low hum that emanates from data centres, where tens of thousands of chips make trillions of computations a second to help drive the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution. These chips power the text, images and video generated by the queries made by the world of the advanced AI models. Their computations, which are in effect the switching on and off of microscopic silicon transistors that make up a chip, are actually silent. But, as with all computers, almost every watt of the significant electricity powering this process leaves as heat, and the sound you can hear is the slow whir of thousands of fans required to prevent the heat from frying the racks of servers. Depending on the size of the site, you may also hear the thrum of transformers in substations channelling electricity. Bond yields are spiking, oil is up — but investors aren’t giving up on stocks

Image
Surging oil prices and bond yields have made markets choppy in recent weeks but many investors are digging ing and hoping returns are in sight. Global government bonds extended a sell-off after the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield breached the closely watched 5% level on Tuesday, while oil has been holding above $100 a barrel as the Iran war's supply shock continues. Equities have largely been on a tear this year despite a global energy crisis, surging bond yields and bouts of volatile trade amid geopolitical developments, with the S&P 500 adding more than 10.8% so far this year. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite has jumped 11.8% year-to-date, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average is up 8.4%. Beyond Wall Street, stocks listed in South Korea , Japan and Europe have also rallied. As stocks faced more volatility this week after leading AI voices warned the tech was moving too fast to be safe and safeguards were needed, Bank of America's latest Global Fund Manager Survey revealed on...

Third Heathrow runway should only go ahead if airlines pay for cleaner flying, say advisers

Image
Image source, Getty Images By Matt McGrath Environment correspondent Published 3 hours ago Heathrow's third runway cannot be approved without changes to current climate policies, the government's advisers have said. The Climate Change Committee (CCC) , external said expansion can still go ahead but only if the aviation industry funds cleaner fuels and pays for machines that suck carbon dioxide out of the air. Making the industry pay could push up the cost of flying with a return trip to Alicante costing around 150 more by 2050, and a return to New York up 400 in today's prices, it said. Once built, the expanded airport would produce more carbon dioxide than any other single sector of the economy by 2050. Heathrow said expansion and climate goals were "not a choice" and it would deliver both. "Our advice today is clear - Heathrow expansion is not currently compatible with the UK's Net Zero target," said Nigel Topping, the CCC chair. "Government ...

By Kali Hays Technology reporter Published 15 September 2026 Updated 2 hours ago OpenAI boss Sam Altman thinks people should have more faith in his company and others like it to do the right thing when it comes to artificial intelligence (AI) development amid rising public concerns about all the risks. "The world should trust that we are going to do the right thing because it's the right thing and we feel the magnitude of this," Altman said on Tuesday during a conference in San Francisco. However, Altman noted that people were justified in their fears around AI, as the capability of the tools has progressed rapidly. "It doesn't take as much imagination as it used to for [us] to imagine how this could go wrong," he said. "I think the world is right to be afraid of this." Altman's comment...

Iran war has cost on average $246 million per day in its first five months, CBO finds

Image
The U.S. war with Iran cost the Pentagon an estimated $38.1 billion through Aug. 1 and could cost another $2 billion to $3 billion for each additional month of fighting, according to a report released Tuesday by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. More than half of the cost has come from replacing missiles and other munitions used during the conflict. Increased flying hours cost another $10.4 billion, while higher fuel prices added $2.7 billion, CBO estimated. The war has led fuel prices around the world to rise since President Donald Trump launched it Feb. 28. The war has also consumed as much as two-thirds of the nation's missile-defense interceptors since June 2025, largely as a result of the U.S. helping defend Israel against Iranian attacks, leaving the U.S. with reduced inventories for several years, CBO warned. "Rebuilding DoD's inventory of interceptors would probably take at least five years even if production was increased," CBO said in the report,...

Cars have become a huge burden for many people, with the average monthly payment for a new vehicle coming in at $770 in the first quarter of 2026 and the average payment for a used car totaling $531 (1). And that's just the base cost of ownership that doesn't even include the cost of gas, insurance or repairs. With such high prices, it shouldn't come as a surprise that over half of all drivers (58%) admitted in 2025 that they couldn't afford a car repair costing $1,000 or more (2). Saudi pipeline closure is a brief interruption that will last days, U.S. Energy Secretary tells CNBC

Image
Saudi Arabia's critical East-West crude oil pipeline will start operating again "very soon" after Iran-backed attacks forced its closure, U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright told CNBC in an interview Tuesday. "This will be a brief and temporary interruption," Wright told CNBC's Morgan Brennan at a meeting of G20 nations in Houston. "It will be measured in days." The Saudis closed the pipeline late last week after it sustained damage in drone attacks launched from Iraq. Iran-backed proxy groups were responsible for the strikes, Wright said. Riyadh has relied on the pipeline to shift crude oil exports to the Red Sea as the U.S. and Iran battle for control over the Strait of Hormuz. The Saudis are now shifting some oil exports back through Hormuz with U.S. military support while the pipeline is down, Wright said. U.S. crude oil prices have gained more than 5% this week to trade above $105 per barrel, as the market tries to assess how big a supply disr...
