Inside the S&P 500 AI boom, industrials are getting as rich as tech stocks

Image
As the AI infrastructure buildout and global geopolitical developments spur massive spending, an old-guard sector of the economy is getting a level of attention from investors that rivals the action in tech. The industrials sector of the S&P 500 is trading at a price-to-earnings ratio above 30, a level investors more often associate with high fliers, and a P/E ratio that is well above industrials' long-term average, which is closer to 20. "If you look at [Industrial Select Sector SPDR] XLI from State Street, its valuations are really high relative to the S&P 500," Cinthia Murphy, director of research at VettaFi, said on the most recent "ETF Edge." "It's as high as tech, so it really is a sector that has really had its moment in the sun and picked up a lot of attention," Murphy said. The race to construct AI data centers in hopes of gaining a durable business advantage in a rapidly-shifting digital infrastructure has gripped the corporate w...

Rental searches for pet friendly properties drop after law change

Image
Image source, Getty Images By Kevin Peachey Cost of living correspondent Published 39 minutes ago Rightmove searches for rental properties that allow pets have plummeted since law changes gave renters more rights. Following the introduction of the new rules, pet searches dropped by more than 50% in May and June compared with a year earlier. Landlords in England cannot unreasonably refuse pets in their properties under changes made in May in the Renters' Rights Act. But agents say some renters wrongly believe permission to have a pet is guaranteed, and landlords say some homes remain unsuitable for multiple pets or large dogs. "Landlords must consider requests fairly and cannot unreasonably refuse them, but they can still decline where there is a valid reason," said Megan Eighteen, immediate past president of lettings agents trade body ARLA Propertymark. She said there was plenty of "potential for misunderstanding", among tenants about pet-friendly properties. P...

Do I need a business bank account if I'm self-employed? It's not required, but highly recommended. Sarah C. Brady Contributor Updated Fri, July 24, 2026 at 1:50 PM PDT 6 min read As a small business owner, you're not legally required to have a business bank account. But the longer you mingle your business and personal finances, the more likely you are to regret it. While separating your business and personal bank accounts can be a pain, it's highly recommended you do so, since having separate accounts makes it easier to file taxes and qualify for loans. Not to mention, it could benefit your business's bottom line. Are you required to have a business bank account if you're self-employed? From Silicon Valley to DC, the tech world is suddenly obsessed with one concept in AI: Distillation

Image
Earlier this year, Google AI lead Jeff Dean, on a podcast , discussed a concept that, at the time, was hardly spoken about outside of wonky tech circles: distillation. In talking about the development of Google's AI models, Dean said that he and colleagues discovered artificial intelligence distillation techniques because Google was looking to improve performance on its systems without relying on one large image recognition model. "Through distillation, which is a key technique for making the smaller models more capable, you have to have the frontier model in order to then distill it into your smaller model," Dean said in February. Five months later, distillation has suddenly become a hot-button topic from Silicon Valley to Washington, D.C., as techies and lawmakers debate whether the practice is turning into a national security threat and enabling China to catch the U.S. in the high-stakes AI race. Concern bubbled up late last week after Chinese lab Moonshot AI released...

Faisal Islam: The UK's Trump trade deal no longer looks world-beating

Image
Image source, Getty Images By Faisal Islam Economics editor Published 24 July 2026 It has been a long road for President Donald Trump as he looks for a justification to erect a tariff wall around the US, including against key allies. From the opioid crisis to illegal migration, then the need to bring manufacturing back to America's shores, the list goes on. Through Trump's second term, there has been a new justification almost every month for the trade levies he is seeking to place on allies. Some have been overturned by the courts, others by economics and some even by their own logic. And so, Trump has now turned to effectively accusing dozens of trade partners of trading in goods that have been produced using forced labour. These are "tariffs in search of an authority", as one industry figure put it. The forced labour line shores up President Trump's tariffs against a challenge from Congress or the courts. In practice, the levies are curiously similar by countr...

Trump vows to investigate EU over fining of US tech companies

Image
Image source, Reuters Image caption, US President Donald Trump has taken issue with European regulators in the past. By Kali Hays Technology reporter Published 24 July 2026 Donald Trump says the US will launch an investigation into the European Union and threatened a fresh tariff over fines handed to some of the biggest American tech companies. It comes days after the European Commission fined Google 890m ($1bn) for operating in a way that squeezed out competitors to its services. In a post to Truth Social, which Trump owns, the US president said the EU would pay a "very big price" over how it had treated Google, along with other major US tech companies Apple, Meta, and Amazon, which have also been investigated. "The United States of America is not a "PIGGYBANK" for Europe, nor will we allow it to be!" he wrote. Trump said any fines should be "entirely reversed" and that he was initiating a trade investigation of the EU while considering "a...

Analysis: A powerful new coalition of AI skeptics is coalescing right in Trump's blind spot

Image
The emerging coalition of religious leaders , labor unions and local activists that worries about artificial intelligence and the broader economic upheaval it portends poses a political problem for anyone who gets on the wrong side of that issue . And President Donald Trump is the person most at risk. AI is positioned right in his blind political spot . The industry and its rapidly developing technology threaten to overwhelm Trump's often-uncanny ability to sense changes in the political winds and could damage his party's fortunes in the midterm election and the longer-term legacy he values. Trump seems aware of the danger, yet can't help himself from hurtling toward it. On Thursday, he touted commitments by data center developers and utilities not to raise electricity prices, nodding to fears across the country that a surge in data center construction will spike Americans' energy bills. The pledge is a no-brainer for the likes of OpenAI and Oracle , giving them pol...

Trump sued hours after new tariffs take effect, as experts say they may not hold up

Image
President Donald Trump 's global "liberation day" tariffs were struck down in the courts, shattering the cornerstone of his trade agenda. Some trade experts say his newest duties could meet the same fate and they've already caught their first legal challenge. The Trump administration on Friday imposed broad tariffs on goods from more than 80 countries, alleging they have failed to effectively prohibit the use of forced labor practices. The latest tariffs applying to trade partners that cover 99.4% of U.S. trade were brought under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, which enables the government to impose import levies in response to unfair trade practices. Section 301 has been used many times across presidential administrations to threaten or impose tariffs including against China during Trump's first administration. But Trump is "using the statute in a fundamentally different way," Peter Harrell, visiting scholar at Georgetown University Law Center...

ADHD has rewired the workplace. This is what it means for bosses and workers

Image
By Esyllt Carr Business reporter Taking one of the UK's biggest grocery chains to an employment tribunal was something that Ryan Toghill says almost took over his life. "It was all I could think about for 18 months and more," he says. The deputy store manager at Lidl, who'd told his bosses he'd been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), was called to a disciplinary meeting after breaking company rules by using equipment he hadn't been trained to use. After that meeting, Ryan was dismissed for gross misconduct. He successfully appealed the decision and was offered a lower-paid role. He rejected it and took his case to a tribunal. Eventually, he was awarded more than 45,000 when the judge found his former employer hadn't fully taken his ADHD diagnosis into account during the disciplinary process. The judgement found reasonable adjustments during the process hadn't been offered to him, such as additional breaks. He'd been de...
