Jeremy Grantham says this is the most expensive market in 'American history'

Image
Veteran investor Jeremy Grantham thinks the artificial intelligence boom has pushed the U.S. stock market to its most expensive level ever and could eventually lead to a historic decline. "Based on the value of the stock market compared to GDP, with modifications, this is the most expensive market in American history," Grantham told CNBC's " Squawk Box ." While the GMO co-founder said he wasn't sure there was a comparable period, the tech bubble of 2000 is the closest analogy. He also highlighted the so-called Buffet indicator , which compares the total value of the U.S. stock market valuation with the size of the economy in terms of GDP. The market capitalization to GDP ratio referenced by Grantham is estimated to be at 235%, according to Longtermtrends.com . It means that the value of the total stock market is more than two times the size of the U.S. economy. Legendary investor Warren Buffett used this indicator, saying years ago that when it "approa...

The Nvidia Trap: Why the Tech Giant’s Runway Is Running Out

Image
The Nvidia Trap: Why the Tech Giant’s Runway Is Running Out Mikhail Fedorov Wed, June 24, 2026 at 6:00 AM PDT 8 min read NVDA NVIDIA Corp video chip-by Antonio Bordunovi via iStock Today, Nvidia (NVDA) comes across as an unshakable dominator and primary beneficiary of the AI paradigm shift. Its trillion-dollar valuation and phenomenal quarterly filings paint an illusion of an endless, smooth runway for investors, with the trading floor pricing shares as if its geometric ascent will never crash into a concrete barrier. Yet the reality is noticeably harsher. The runway is ending. The severe physical constraints of the semiconductor space and fundamental laws of economics relentlessly dictate their own terms. Nvidia is being dragged into a grueling two-front strategic war that will inevitably slice through its anomalous excess profits. Ryanair says it will reluctantly not charge parents to sit next to children

Image
Image source, Getty Images By Jemma Crew Business reporter Published 25 June 2026, 12:47 BST Updated 7 hours ago Ryanair has changed its family seating policy to allow parents to sit next to their young children without paying a seat reservation fee, after an investigation was opened. Adults travelling with children who do not wish to pay for a reserved seat will now be told of their free seat allocation after check-in, which Ryanair said was in line with most other European airlines. Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary said it would "reluctantly adjust to this industry standard", but insisted its long-standing policy fully complied with laws and had given families "certainty". It comes after the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said it was looking into whether the policy was unfair under consumer law. The CMA said it would test whether the airline's new seating policy complies with the law, and that its investigation continues. 'Minor policy tweak'...

Bond ETF flows surge in hunt for yield: 'Market sniffing out something here,' says BlackRock exec

Image
Amid recent bouts of stock volatility and a new Fed chair coming into a complex inflation environment, the action in bond ETFs is sending an important signal to the market. "Flows tell the story," Steve Laipply, global co-head of iShares fixed-income ETFs at BlackRock, told CNBC's Dominic Chu this week. And that is a story of rising investor interest in yield across the fixed-income market. "In the U.S., bond ETF flows are up a shocking 60% relative to last year," Laipply said. Laipply said a significant share of the flows are going into U.S. treasuries, but there also has been a significant move by investors into multi-sector income ETFs. "The income story is very robust and enduring, because rates will continue to move around and 'real yields' are definitely an opportunity," he said, a reference to bond yields net the rate of inflation. "Real yields reflect a growth story," he said, led by the AI boom and the anticipated increase i...

Iranian leader scoffs at Trump claim that Iran must buy U.S. farm products with unfrozen assets

Image
The speaker of Iran 's parliament on Thursday scoffed at Trump administration claims that the Islamic Republic's unfrozen assets will be used to purchase U.S. agricultural products . The retort by Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf came after days of statements by President Donald Trump and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent that a temporary peace deal that will lead to unfreezing Iranian assets will be a boon to U.S. farmers. The comment came as Trump is facing criticism from some Republican lawmakers over his handling of the war against Iran and the memorandum of understanding that has paused it to allow for peace talks. "America falsely claims our unfrozen assets will buy their agriculture. Interesting," Ghalibaf wrote in a post on X . "The only crop we're harvesting is what you planted: decades of mistrust," Ghalibaf wrote. "It's organic, abundant, and homegrown. But apparently the US only exports GMO soybeans, broken promises and trash talks." CN...

Bayer wins Supreme Court case making it harder to sue over glyphosate in Monsanto's Roundup

Image
The Supreme Court in a 7-2 decision on Thursday said Bayer cannot be sued over state-level claims that the company failed to warn of cancer risks from its weedkiller Roundup and its chemical glyphosate . The decision is a major win for Bayer and the Trump administration, which argued that failure-to-warn claims were preempted by a federal law that governs pesticides. It's also a major blow to the Make America Healthy Again movement, which helped return Trump to the White House in the 2024 election but has felt betrayed by the administration's embrace of glyphosate the most commonly used weedkiller in agriculture that has long been linked to cancer claims. Justice Brett Kavanaugh wrote for the majority, arguing that because the Environmental Protection Agency deems glyphosate safe when used properly and has not required a cancer warning label, the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act preempts state-level failure to warn claims. "As demonstrated by that compre...

Micron is up 10% after blockbuster earnings, but has pulled back from highs

Image
Micron stock soared on Thursday after the memory maker reported blockbuster third-quarter earnings as the artificial intelligence boom causes demand for memory to surge. Shares climbed as high as 19%, pushing Micron's market cap above Meta and Tesla among the most valuable U.S. companies. The stock later pared those gains. The company's revenue more than quadrupled from $9.3 billion a year earlier to $41.46 billion in its fiscal third quarter, it reported on Wednesday. Revenue came in higher than analyst expectations of nearly $36 billion, according to LSEG consensus estimates. The company is now forecasting revenue of about $50 billion for the current quarter, an increase from $11.3 billion in the prior year . Micron shares over the past year. Micron has benefited from the AI infrastructure buildout by major hyperscalers, as AI data centers require large amounts of memory chips. That has reduced the supply of memory available for smartphones, PCs, and other devices, creating...

Oil price falls to levels not seen since before Iran war

Image
Image source, The Dallas Morning News via Getty Images By Osmond Chia Business reporter Published 25 June 2026, 08:11 BST Updated 2 hours ago The price of oil has fallen to levels not seen since before the Iran war as traffic through the key Strait of Hormuz shipping route gradually resumes. Global benchmark Brent crude briefly fell below $72.48 ( 55) a barrel, the price it was at the day before the US and Israel launched attacks on Iran on 28 February, before edging up to $72.63. Energy prices have been on a wild ride since Iran responded to the strikes by effectively closing the strait, a critical waterway for oil and gas shipments. The cost of crude has been moving sharply lower since the US and Iran signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on 17 June which set out a 60-day period for negotiations on Tehran's nuclear programme and other measures to end the war. Representatives from the two sides met in Switzerland last weekend for talks to end the war, which resulted in the U...

This video can not be played Figure caption, 'I don't think anyone can doubt my commitment to the prime minister' - Rachel Reeves By Rachel Clun and Peter Ruddick , Business reporters Published 4 hours ago Chancellor Rachel Reeves has backed Andy Burnham to be the next prime minister, despite reports he could demote her to a junior cabinet position if he becomes the Labour Party leader. "I'm supporting Andy to be prime minister," she told the BBC. Burnham, who was sworn in as the member for Makerfield earlier this week, is expected to replace Reeves as chancellor if he becomes prime minister. So far, he is the only candidate to have put their hand up for the Labour leadership. Reeves acknowledged it was up to Burnham whether she stayed on as chancellor, but said she stood ready to provide targeted, temporary relief on energy bills in the autumn. One of India's largest gold exporters paid its managing director just $180 a month, investigators say in accounting probe

Image
Indian authorities uncovered multiple accounting and operational irregularities at one of the country's largest gold companies, Rajesh Exports , according to an investigation released Wednesday, weeks after market regulators raised concerns over the company's reported revenue. The Bengaluru-based company, which also owns Switzerland-based major gold refiner Valcambi, reported consolidated revenue of more than 7.7 trillion rupees ($81 billion) last year, the Directorate of Enforcement said in a statement. Its managing director was paid a monthly salary of 17,000 rupees (around $180) and the chief financial officer had not received a salary since 2020, the agency said. "The company's key business indicators showed significant departures from normal commercial practices," the agency said. Shares of the company dropped around 5% on Thursday before hitting the exchange-imposed lower trading limit, according to data on LSEG. Search and seizure operations at the company...

Iran declares new Hormuz route 'unacceptable and dangerous,' warns against ships transiting without approval

Image
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps warned shipowners on Wednesday that any new transit route through the Strait of Hormuz established without coordination with Tehran is "unacceptable and dangerous," threatening actions against vessels that ignore its instructions. The stern warning underscores Tehran's resolve to retain control over the Strait of Hormuz and to resist transits that bypass its authorization. It also highlights the lingering uncertainty facing shipowners navigating the Strait even after the U.S. and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding last week to reopen the strategically vital energy artery. The IRGC Navy said that only the shipping routes designated by Iran are permitted for passage, and that coordination with Iranian forces via the designated communication channel is mandatory, according to Iranian local media . "Navigation outside these routes is highly dangerous and prohibited, and we warn all vessels to strictly avoid any movemen...
