Haya Therapeutics, a Swiss biotech founded in 2019 by Algerian biologist Samir Ounzain, has signed a $1 billion deal with Eli Lilly. Based in Lausanne, the company develops RNA-based therapies to treat severe diseases by exploring the "dark genome."
The agreement focuses on identifying drug targets for obesity and associated metabolic diseases. The contract includes several milestone payments, from preclinical to commercial stages, providing a major boost to the start-up’s growth.
About Samir Ounzain:
Samir Ounzain was born in 1983 in Koléa, Algeria. After growing up in the UK, he moved to Switzerland, where he founded Haya Therapeutics after working at the Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV). He holds a degree in biochemistry and molecular biology from the University of Leeds and a PhD in molecular cardiology from the University of Leicester.
