The world appears to be entering a higher-rate era. Here’s who will pay the price

Image
The global bond rout is raising borrowing costs across the economy and forcing governments, companies and consumers to confront the possibility that expensive debt is here to stay. Global bond yields have been climbing to multiyear highs, with Germany's 10-year yield reaching its highest since 2011, Japan's holding above 3%, U.S. 10-year Treasury yields touching their highest since November 2023 and UK gilt yields hitting a post-2008 peak in recent days. The latest leg of the sell-off is a reflection of a mix of high government debt issuance, an oil-price shock that has reignited inflation concerns and expectations that central banks may keep monetary policy tighter for longer. The move may mark more than another bout of bond-market volatility, with consequences stretching across economies and financial markets. This is the continuation of a medium-term trend that’ll keep going for many years, said Robin Brooks, senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. Natalia Lojevsky, ma...

Tiger Global Cut Alphabet 45% and Opened an AMD Position. Is It Rotating From AI Platforms to AI Chips? Habib Ur Rehman Wed, September 2, 2026 at 4:01 AM PDT 3 min read GOOG AMD Tiger Global Management made a dramatic-looking second-quarter rotation within AI. Its August 14 filing showed the fund cutting Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOGL ) by 45.4%, from 10.63 million shares to 5.81 million, while opening a position in Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMD ). The trade shifts some exposure from a giant platform funding AI infrastructure to a chip supplier seeking share within it. Yet Alphabet remained a large holding, so this is better understood as rebalancing than abandonment. A financial analyst presenting a chart of insurance solutions to a boardroom. Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) still has a formidable bull case. Google Cloud grew 82%, and the company can distribute AI across search, advertising, productivity software, and enterprise services. Nepal’s mountain tourism industry faces ‘serious warning’ after Himalayan flood disaster

Image
Nepal's renowned adventure tourism industry faces a sobering reality check, according to local mountain tourist associations and hostel owners, following devastating flooding on Nepal's border with China. The death toll from last week's disaster, which tore through villages along the Nepal-Tibet border, stood at 987, authorities said Tuesday. Nearly 4,250 people were missing, they added. The catastrophe began on Aug. 26 in the Himalayas, a mountain range that contains some of the world's highest peaks, including the highest, Mount Everest . A massive glacial collapse in northern Nepal triggered a landslide of ice and rock and meltwater into the valleys below, with powerful floods sweeping away or cutting off entire communities and damaging roads, bridges and hydropower facilities. The tragedy, which prompted Nepali Prime Minister Balendra Shah to push for international climate action, underscores the growing impact of climate change on adventure tourism. Rajendra Ba...

Australia posts second-quarter growth of 2.1%, beating expectations

Image
Australia's economic growth beat expectations in the second quarter, expanding 2.1% year on year, data released Wednesday showed. Economists polled by Reuters had estimated growth at 1.8%, while the economy had expanded by 2.5% in the prior quarter. On a quarter-on-quarter basis, GDP rose 0.4%, also marginally surpassing expectations of 0.3%. The slight growth was driven by private demand and mining exports. The Australian Bureau of Statistics said in its statement that households continued to behave cautiously, with spending remaining subdued and rising just 0.4%. Households reduced fuel consumption due to elevated prices owed to the Middle East conflict, and cut domestic and international travel. The stronger-than-expected GDP print will allow the Reserve Bank of Australia room to go ahead with its policy tightening as it seeks to curb inflation. At its last meeting , some RBA board members had considered the case for additional tightening, saying that inflation in the country w...

China dissented from G20 statement opposing 'cheap exports' flooding market, Bessent says

Image
China was the only Group of 20 member to dissent from a joint statement that "non-market based economies pushing out a never-ending stream of cheap exports is not sustainable," Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Tuesday. The other G20 members will take action in the coming "days, weeks or months" to "reach a resolution on this unsustainable equilibrium," Bessent said at a press conference following days of meetings with finance ministers and central bankers in Asheville, North Carolina. The statement, released later Tuesday by the Treasury Department, includes a footnote specifying that China objected to a paragraph in which the 19 members agreed "that countries should take steps to eliminate non-market policies and practices that exacerbate imbalances." "In particular, countries with excessive and persistent external surpluses should remove distortions that constrain domestic consumption and that result in an overreliance on exports for...

Cattle, Hog Prices Are Still Trapped and Heading Lower. What to Watch Next. Jim Wyckoff Mon, August 31, 2026 at 7:29 AM PDT 4 min read LE=F HE=F Angus cow by Jeremy Stenuit via iStock October live cattle (LEV26) futures on Friday fell $1.20 to $211.725 and for the week were down $6.20. November feeder cattle (GFX26) futures lost $1.55 to $309.925 and on the week lost $6.325. The cattle futures markets have seen steady technical selling over the past four weeks as both markets remain trapped in price downtrends on the daily bar charts. Cattle traders this week will digest the implications of President Donald Trump's administration trying to bring down the price of beef at the meat counter. Trump Friday said on social media that his administration will seek changes to allow farmers and ranchers to slaughter and process their own products in response to calls to loosen the grip of the big companies that dominate U.S. meat processing. "I am authorizing legal documents to be drawn...

Prediction market traders think job creation rebounded in August

Image
After a disappointing July payrolls report that showed the economy lost jobs that month, traders on prediction market platforms think August will show a rebound in hiring, though potentially not as strong as economists think. Speculators on Kalshi see 50-50 odds that more than 50,000 jobs were created last month. That implies a slightly lower outlook than Dow Jones consensus estimate for 53,000 jobs created in August. On the contracts on the market, traders are asked whether they think the U.S. added more than a certain number of jobs in the month. The contracts are resolved using official data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Prediction market traders on Polymarket give a 48% likelihood the economy created more than 50,000 jobs in August. For two months in a row, prediction market traders and economists have overestimated payroll numbers. Both expected job creation numbers in the six figures in June when they actually came in just below 60,000 and for the economy to create jobs i...

U.S. strikes Iran after new Hormuz Strait shipping attacks: Centcom

Image
The U.S. military launched new strikes against Iranian targets around the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday, U.S. Central Command said in a social media post , after a pair of oil tankers came under attack in the critical shipping route. The strikes come after President Donald Trump had reportedly been considering a CENTCOM plan for limited attacks aimed at preventing Iran from rebuilding radar and missile capabilities that could be used to target ships in the strait. CENTCOM said U.S. forces began striking Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps targets in Iran at noon ET after recent attempted attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and U.S. personnel in the region. The command did not immediately disclose the number or location of targets or what U.S. military assets were involved. Trump called the strikes "large and powerful" in a Truth Social post Tuesday, saying they were retaliation for Iran's attempt to add sea mines to the Strait of Hormuz and its missile att...
