Military veterans told they owe thousands of pounds over clerical error

Image source, BBC News Image caption, Royal Artillery veteran Ray Lawton has been ordered to repay 8,000 By Colletta Smith , BBC Your Voice correspondent and Bobbi Huyton , BBC Your Voice journalist Published 4 hours ago Hundreds of former members of the military have had their pensions slashed after receiving letters telling them to repay thousands of pounds because of a clerical error. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed to the BBC that more than 1000 retired service personnel are being pursued for debts. The majority, 335 veterans, were overpaid a total of 5.1m as a result of incorrect National Insurance calculations. The Forces Pension Society said it is aware of a small number of veterans whose debts were wiped after raising a formal complaint. Ray Lawton, 70, was told in July he owed 8,000 following six years of overpayments. Days later, his monthly military pension was cut from 550 to 365. "I haven't got 8,000 to pay out," said Lawton, who served 16 years in t...

Meta's $18bn settlement may hasten reckoning for social media on child safety

This video can not be played Figure caption, 'Finally, something was done' - Parent reacts to social media trial settlement By Zoe Kleinman Technology editor Published 8 hours ago Meta's decision to agree to an $18bn ( 13.3bn) settlement on Wednesday, to resolve claims that Facebook and Instagram harmed children, came as a surprise. I was expecting weeks of courtroom drama as 29 states almost two-thirds of North America - took on one US tech giant. Technically, the trial was about children's online privacy. It was based on a US law called the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), which is nearly 30 years old and predates all of today's biggest social platforms. It centred around Meta's historic gathering and use of data belonging to children under the age of 13 over a period of several years. In reality, it was a co-ordinated attack on the firm's online safety credentia...

Z.ai shares surge 8% after releasing new AI model running only on Chinese chips

Image
BEIJING Chinese artificial intelligence company Z.ai released a new model Wednesday that the company claims uses entirely homegrown semiconductors to operate. Called GLM-5.3-Flash, the low-cost version of Z.ai's flagship model ranks 10th on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, ahead of DeepSeek V4 Pro Max. Z.ai's Hong Kong-listed shares climbed more than 8% in Thursday trading. The company claimed it used 100,000 China-made chips to handle all online requests to use GLM-5.3-Flash, including when it was released on Aug. 20 under the code name "Ox Alpha." The model ranked first by usage in the last week on the global OpenRouter platform. CNBC was unable to independently verify Z.ai's chip claims. The company declined to share details on which companies' chips it was using. Running an AI model requires less computing power than training a model. Nvidia has struggled to sell its chips to China due to restrictions from Washington and Beijing. Meanwhile, Hua...

Ray Dalio says the US faces a debt crisis in three years, give or take two.’ 5 things Americans can do now Mike Crisolago Tue, August 25, 2026 at 7:30 AM PDT 6 min read Amal Alhasan/Getty Images Billionaire Ray Dalio warned last week that the U.S. is heading for a major debt crisis, likening the nation to a person on the verge of a heart attack. The Bridgewater Associates founder wrote in an August 21 LinkedIn post that a $4 billion U.S. debt buyback , combined with rising bond yields , a weak dollar and a Japanese sell-off of U.S. bond holdings all point to a potential government debt crisis, which can result in "the equivalent of an economic heart attack that comes when the constriction of debt-financed spending shuts down the normal flow of the economic circulatory system." U.S. still watching allies for alignment of interests even amid defense pullback, analyst says

Image
A U.S. pullback from Asia will give regional allies more responsibility for their own defense but Washington is still watching for alignment with its own interests, according to Derek Grossman, professor of political science at the University of Southern California. "The guiding mantra has been less of the U.S. is more, so long as countries who are doing things in the absence of the United States are doing things in line with what the U.S. wants," Grossman told "Squawk Box Asia" on Wednesday. Grossman's comments came after President Donald Trump reiterated calls to substantially reduce joint military exercises with South Korea, citing the cost of drills, Seoul's refusal to support U.S. war efforts against Iran, and his "good" relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. This week, the U.S. military also moved to cancel joint marine drills with South Korea that were scheduled for next month, due to constraints from the Iran war. Washington ap...

Can We Really Grow Our Way Out Of’ $40 Trillion in National Debt? Why One Economist Says The US Has No Chance.’ Sarah Holzmann Tue, August 25, 2026 at 9:11 AM PDT 4 min read When the national debt topped $40 trillion last week, it was a round-number milestone that grabbed mainstream media attention. It also coincided with a rough week in the news for Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, whose intervention in the bond markets was widely viewed as a failure. Undeterred, Bessent on Thursday seemed to dismiss the ballooning national debt as a relative blip on the Treasury's radar. SpaceX Stock Just Crashed Below Its IPO Price: Here’s the Bull Case Nobody Can Ignore

SpaceX Stock Just Crashed Below Its IPO Price: Here’s the Bull Case Nobody Can Ignore Nauman Khan Tue, August 25, 2026 at 8:23 AM PDT 4 min read SPCX A close-up of a SpaceX sign by Sundry Photography via Adobe Stock SpaceX (SPCX) stock is back around its IPO price, putting investors in a familiar dilemma: Is this a buying opportunity or another warning sign? Shares dropped nearly 5% on Thursday to $132.69, slipping beneath the company's $135 IPO price and ending a streak of six consecutive closes above that benchmark. The decline came after SPCX repeatedly struggled to break through $150, the price at which it opened on June 12. For a stock that once surged to $225.60, the reversal has been dramatic. SpaceX has already fallen nearly 40% from its June peak and traded as low as $104.83 on Aug. 3. Yet the underlying business is growing at a remarkable pace. That makes the question of whether to buy SPCX stock more complicated than simply looking at the chart. More News from Barchart ...

Software is crushing chips by a record margin: Chart of the Day Jared Blikre Tue, August 25, 2026 at 3:00 AM PDT 3 min read NVDA Software stocks are near record highs. Chips are still stuck in a bear market except Nvidia ( NVDA ) never really joined them. The handoff happened almost to the day. Chip stocks peaked on June 22. Software bottomed right around then, kicking off a multitrillion-dollar reversal that has sent the two groups in almost perfectly opposite directions. Strip out the megacaps, and the symmetry is wild. The equal-weight SPDR S&P Software & Services ETF ( XSW ) is up about 24% since then, while the equal-weight SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF ( XSD ) is down about 24%. That nearly 50-percentage-point gap is the widest comparable software-over-chips move in the ETFs' history, dating back to 2011. The equal-weighted software ETF has surged while the equal-weighted chip ETF has tumbled, creating a record gap of nearly 50 percentage points. Yahoo Finance Alpha...

Nvidia's forward price-to-earnings (P/E) multiple has declined steadily since August 2024, when artificial intelligence began to take hold, unleashing a boom in the company's stock price and earnings growth (see the graphic below). The decline has only accelerated this year despite a series of strong quarters. Bill Gates warns ‘there is no plan’ for the ‘upheaval’ AI will cause

Image
There is "no plan" for the "social, political, and economic upheaval" AI is about to cause, Bill Gates has warned. The Microsoft co-founder said that AI could become either the "greatest equalizer ever invented, or the worst source of injustice," but that he saw no "evidence that leaders, experts, and communities are confronting the challenges adequately." In an essay published Wednesday, Gates said AI could displace workers across the economy, squeeze entry-level hiring and force policymakers to rethink employment, education and the social safety net. The essay is a shift from past statements from Gates, who works with Microsoft and other AI companies through the Gates Foundation. He told CNBC in October that AI was "the biggest technical thing ever in my lifetime," adding: "It is so profound and therefore its influence is hard to overstate." In his essay, Gates said that new national bodies and international institutions wi...
