'Banned over a pair of £2 sandals': Why some sellers are complaining about Vinted

Image
Image caption, Emma Neil was banned from Vinted after listing a pair of sandals which it deemed to be fake Published 1 hour ago Single mum Emma Neil was a huge fan of Vinted, using it most days to sell old things and buy clothes for her children. That was until she bought a pair of sandals for 3, found they didn't fit so relisted them for 2 then was permanently banned. Vinted said there had been "fraudulent activity, such as selling counterfeit items". "I did feel like a criminal," says Neil - one of several thousands complaining of being wrongly suspended or permanently banned, spending days trapped in a system of what they believe are AI generated responses. Vinted's preloved buying and selling community has grown rapidly with 17 million UK users - it says the "overwhelming majority" have a positive experience. However, Neil is one of more than 4,000 Vinted users who have logged their experiences on sadvintedfaces.com, a website set up by freela...

Film commission backs Amazon MGM expansion of studios

Image
Image source, Amazon MGM Studios Image caption, The expansion proposal promises to create "a world-class studio blending function and desirability" Published 8 hours ago Amazon MGM Studios' planned expansion of a Berkshire-based complex would be a "considerable boost" for filmmaking, a government-funded industry body said. Bray Film Studios, in Water Oakley, near Windsor, was previously used by the Hammer Films company. The previous owner of the studios got planning permission to expand them in 2022 and Amazon MGM bought the site in 2024. The British Film Commission (BFC) said it "recognises that the studio benefits from Amazon MGM's commitment" and welcomed its "ambition to support employment opportunities for both the local community and more widely across the UK sector". The company has been using the site since 2022 and a public consultation regarding the expansion project closed in May. Amazon MGM said its current proposals, which i...

To joke or not to joke?: How to write a good out-of-office message

Image
Image source, Getty Images Published 2 hours ago You're finally about to head off on a well-earned break, but there's one more task to tick off your to-do list: composing an out-of-office reply. Many will be all too familiar with debating how much information to include and how available you will be - and whether to inject some personality into your message, or even risk cracking a joke. Experts say there are clear dos and don'ts when it comes to writing an out-of-office message (OOO) - and getting it wrong can have more serious consequences than you might think. Here are their rules to penning the perfect out-of-office reply. 'Avoid oversharing or boasting' Debretts, an etiquette consultancy, says a good automatic reply should be polite and concise, give a specific return date, and provide another point of contact if appropriate. But you should avoid oversharing, for instance including the specifics of your holiday plans, or boasting about things like second h...

'Absolutely crazy': Here's what South Korean stock investors are doing in U.S. markets

Image
A wave of South Korean investors is flocking to U.S. markets to avoid a correction at home, even as global investors pile in. Korean retail investors net sold domestic stocks for most of last week, even as the benchmark index entered bull market territory, according to Korea Exchange data. Overseas investors reversed course to become net buyers. Here are five things related to those investors: Of the $4.5 billion in U.S. stocks Korean investors net bought in July, around $840 million went into the chipmaker's U.S.-listed depositary receipts, according to Korea Securities Depository data. SK Hynix's ADRs were the second most net-purchased U.S. securities, even though Korean investors can buy the same company directly at home. The U.S. receipts have traded at a premium to the Korean shares, which Owen Lamont, senior vice president of Acadian Asset Management, said was about 10% recently. They're also exhibiting greater volatility. "That's absolutely crazy," Lam...

Home Depot CEO Takes Medical Leave. What This Means for HD Stock Ahead of Earnings. Yiannis Zourmpanos Sun, August 16, 2026 at 8:30 AM PDT 4 min read HD Investors in Home Depot (HD) stock were greeted by a surprise on Tuesday when CEO Ted Decker said he was taking a brief medical leave that will last a few months. The timing comes only days before the home improvement behemoth releases fiscal second-quarter results on Aug. 18. But there is a key nuance here for investors. Decker has not resigned, and Home Depot has put in place two very experienced executives to split Decker's duties. Ann-Marie Campbell, senior executive vice president of U.S. stores and operations, will handle operations, while CFO Richard McPhail will handle finance and the company's Pro subsidiaries. For now, this looks more like a brief governance problem than a change to the underlying investment thesis on Home Depot. Lakers governor Jeanie Buss says siblings cannot sell family’s stake to Bob Iger, Joshua Kushner

Image
Los Angeles Lakers governor Jeanie Buss is opposing the potential sale of her family's stake in the NBA team, contradicting an earlier ESPN report about the family's decision to sell to Bob Iger and Joshua Kushner. In a letter obtained by CNBC addressed to law firms representing Jeanie Buss's siblings Jim, Johnny, Janie, Joey and Jesse her lawyer Adam Streisand says Jeanie Buss has not agreed to sell the team and that any vote suggesting the Buss family is selling "would be and is void." Streisand argues in the letter that Jeanie Buss remains the controlling shareholder of the Lakers, pursuant to a 2017 court order, and that no sale can take place without her consent. "No sale of the JAB Trust's 17.8% ownership interest in the Los Angeles Lakers, Inc. can be effectuated without approval by the current co-trustees, i.e., Jeanie, Janie and Joey Buss. Pursuant to the JAB Trust and the attached Court Order, the co-trustees are bound to vote the Los Angeles L...

Central banks are still piling into gold and new surveys suggest they're also preparing to reduce their exposure to the U.S. dollar over the longer term. That's the takeaway from a new survey (1) of global reserve managers. The Official Monetary and Financial Institutions Forum (OMFIF) says it's the first time its survey has found more central banks planning to reduce their dollar exposure over the next decade than increase it. Apple Could Hit $400, But AI Is Coming for Its Most Profitable Business Ghazal Ahmed Mon, August 17, 2026 at 10:21 AM PDT 3 min read AAPL Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL ) received a major vote of confidence from Rothschild Redburn today, with the firm upgrading the stock from Neutral to "Buy" and raising its price target to $400 from $260. The upgrade rests on two major catalysts for Apple: its entry into premium foldables and a strategic reset to the Apple Intelligence platform. The iPhone Ultra Could Drive the Next Growth Cycle Apple's bull case lies within its tight integration of premium hardware, proprietary silicon, and its rapidly expanding services layer. For the near future, analyst James Cordwell anticipates iPhone sales to grow at a 12% five-year annual compound rate, roughly 3-14% above consensus expectations between fiscal 2026 and 2030. This anticipated increase is backed by Apple's potential entry into the premium foldables market, particularly with the laun...

Prediction market traders see roughly 1-in-4 odds Paramount’s bid to buy Warner Bros. Discovery fails

Image
Prediction markets traders still see Paramount Skydance as likely to succeed in its bid to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery , but a battle in court with 12 state attorneys general is increasing the chances that the merger falls through. Traders on prediction market platform Kalshi think that there's a 74% likelihood that Paramount will acquire Warner Bros. by July 2027, while there are 22% odds that a deal doesn't go through by that date. Before California and 11 other states sued to block the merger on July 13, odds Paramount would succeed in acquiring the company were over 80%. However, the likelihood the merger would be successful fell to as low as 66% on July 24 when Paramount announced it would delay the acquisition to 2027. On Kalshi, speculators are asked in the market who will successfully take over Warner Bros. before July 2027, and contracts are resolved from news reports, official press releases and or government filings. Meanwhile, on platform Polymarket , odds are ...

Soquelitinib, the company's oral ITK inhibitor, is now being tested across five different diseases at once, from a rare blood cancer to asthma. That kind of breadth from a single-asset biotech is either a sign of real conviction in the science or a company spreading itself thin before it has proven anything. The quarter's numbers and trial updates offer evidence for both readings.
