Home Depot reaffirms guidance amid 'frozen housing market conditions'

Image
Home Depot on Tuesday reported fiscal second-quarter results that beat Wall Street expectations on the top and bottom lines and reaffirmed its full fiscal-year guidance. "We continue to operate in what I call 'frozen housing market' conditions, but we also know that we're taking share and that we're serving our customers better every day," CFO Richard McPhail told CNBC. "It's a reflection of the continued investment we've made and the focus on executing our strategy." McPhail said Home Depot saw "broad engagement" across its categories, including in both its pro and do-it-yourself businesses, but the greater uncertainty in the market led the company to reaffirm rather than raise its guidance. He added that Home Depot's customer is "a healthy cohort," though he said the company has still not seen consumers return to big projects. "They've told us they have the means to spend, they're just hesitant," h...

Prediction market traders see roughly 1-in-4 odds Paramount’s bid to buy Warner Bros. Discovery fails

Image
Prediction markets traders still see Paramount Skydance as likely to succeed in its bid to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery , but a battle in court with 12 state attorneys general is increasing the chances that the merger falls through. Traders on prediction market platform Kalshi think that there's a 74% likelihood that Paramount will acquire Warner Bros. by July 2027, while there are 22% odds that a deal doesn't go through by that date. Before California and 11 other states sued to block the merger on July 13, odds Paramount would succeed in acquiring the company were over 80%. However, the likelihood the merger would be successful fell to as low as 66% on July 24 when Paramount announced it would delay the acquisition to 2027. On Kalshi, speculators are asked in the market who will successfully take over Warner Bros. before July 2027, and contracts are resolved from news reports, official press releases and or government filings. Meanwhile, on platform Polymarket , odds are ...

Soquelitinib, the company's oral ITK inhibitor, is now being tested across five different diseases at once, from a rare blood cancer to asthma. That kind of breadth from a single-asset biotech is either a sign of real conviction in the science or a company spreading itself thin before it has proven anything. The quarter's numbers and trial updates offer evidence for both readings. Strait of Hormuz shipping grinds to a halt ahead of U.S.-Iran ceasefire expiry

Image
Shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz slowed to a halt over the weekend ahead of the expiry date of the 60-day ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran on Monday, with no official negotiations or deal in sight. Over the weekend, only five cargo ships passed through the critical oil passage on Saturday, according to data from Kpler cited by Reuters , while no ships were registered to pass through the passage on Sunday. This is compared with 31 vessels the previous weekend. Shipping traffic had already hit a three-month low last week, with a five-day average of 13 vessel transits on Tuesday reflecting the lowest level since May 12, a CNBC analysis of Kpler data found . Overall, shipping is down 90% since before the war started on February 28, with the Strait of Hormuz carrying about a fifth of the world's oil, averaging about 130 vessel transits per day. HSBC shipping expert Parash Jain told CNBC's Squawk Box Europe Monday morning that investors should understand "chaos ...

Jim Cramer Said Domino’s Was Better Than Papa John’s International, Inc. (NASDAQ:PZZA) But Is He Right? Ramish Cheema Sat, August 15, 2026 at 2:35 PM PDT 3 min read DPZ PZZA Pizza chain Papa John's International, Inc. (NASDAQ:PZZA)'s shares are down by 49% over the past year and by 39% year-to-date. On the 6th, the shares closed a whopping 17.8% lower. The dip occurred after Papa John's International, Inc. (NASDAQ:PZZA) reported its second quarter earnings before market open. Looking at the report, it's unsurprising why the shares fell as the firm's second quarter revenue dipped by 8.8%, its system-wide restaurant sales dropped by 4.8% and net income dipped by $1 million to $8.7 million. Cramer hadn't been optimistic about Papa John's International, Inc. (NASDAQ:PZZA) ahead of the earnings and the latest results didn't change his mind: "Think about how Domino's could make a comeback here. Pizza Hut, bought by private equity, always a bad sign. ...

(NYSE:QBTS)'s shares are up by 24% over the past year and are down by just as much year-to-date. Cramer hasn't held back discussing the firm and in most appearances, he has stressed the need to evaluate the firm's business. As D-Wave Quantum Inc. (NYSE:QBTS) reported its second quarter earnings on August 6th, the firm's shares closed the day 9% lower. Cramer discussed the move and wondered whether the market was becoming realistic about D-Wave Quantum Inc. (NYSE:QBTS): "What's incredible is that we never cared about earnings before, for this, for NuScale. And suddenly we care, I don't get it. I just think again, once again, there's kind of a realism sinking in. Let's, a lot of these guys have had such big moves. They're not based on anything. Or, let's just take some profi...

CNBC Daily Open: U.S.-Iran ceasefire set to expire

Image
Hello, this is Leonie Kidd coming to you from London. Volatility - like myself - seems to have taken a break over the summer. After a couple of weeks away from the newsroom, markets seem trapped in a holding pattern. The VIX implied volatility index has dropped to a multi-year low, but it feels like it may not take much to have the market mood swing the other way... The fragile ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran is due to expire today . A senior White House official, speaking to Politico anonymously, described negotiations between Washington and Tehran as "static." Iran's foreign minister Abbas Araghchi wrote in a Telegram post that his country has "not made a decision to restart negotiations with the United States," while Al Jazeera reports that Tehran is working on a separate agreement with Oman to restore traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. Experts are warning that the depletion of U.S. strategic oil reserves could damage the caverns that store oil. The S...

How switching your bank account could earn you up to £220

Image
Image source, Getty Images By Jemma Crew Business reporter Published 6 hours ago Many of us have been with the same bank for years, potentially missing out on hundreds of pounds that rivals are offering us to move to them. Whether it's loyalty, laziness, or fear it'll be a faff that keeps us from switching, banks are competing to change our mind. More than five banks are currently offering incentives to switch - with the largest bonus 220. Plus, if you've got savings, you could get a better interest rate - and therefore a greater return on your money. Almost two thirds of British savers have been with their bank for more than a decade, new research from Hargreaves Lansdown suggests. Its survey, of 3,000 British adults in August, found 34% have moved their money in the last 12 months. It estimates staying put costs British savers around 12bn in missed interest every year, based on analysis of Financial Conduct Authority data. The price of staying put Simon Belsham, Hargre...

Sergey Brin Wants Google to Double Down on Gemini. What That Means for GOOGL Stock. Anushka Dutta Sat, August 15, 2026 at 10:00 AM PDT 4 min read GOOG Alphabet's (GOOGL) Google co-founder Sergey Brin has urged its parent company to focus more on its proprietary LLM Gemini. The report also indicates that Google's executives have taken a more hands-on approach to directing its AI operations. Google has recently announced that its AI wing will have a new boss. DeepMind, Google's AI unit, CEO Demis Hassabis will step down, with Koray Kavukcuoglu, previously the AI unit's CTO and Google's chief AI architect, taking over as SVP. This is a strategic choice as Google faces intense pressure from OpenAI and Anthropic. Anthropic's Mythos model and OpenAI's GPT-5.6 have been lauded, but since the Gemini 3.1 Pro launch, no subsequent Alphabet releases have challenged the AI firms so far. Ferrari's first ever electric car sold for record $40m at auction

Image source, RM Sotheby's Image caption, The Ferrari Luce was launched in May By Osmond Chia Business reporter Published 17 August 2026, 02:47 BST Updated 27 minutes ago Ferrari's first ever all-electric car has fetched $40m ( 29.5m) in a charity sale, setting a record for a new car sold at auction. The RM Sotheby's auction in California raised more than 35 times the usual price of a Ferrari Luce. The auction catalogue said it is a special model featuring a unique finish and bespoke parts. The Luce, the brainchild of iPhone designer Sir Jony Ive , faced a backlash when it was launched in May after some commentators said it had strayed from the marque's traditional designs and lost part of the brand's identity by being battery-powered and having five seats. Sotheby's said all proceeds of the sale will be donated to the Ferrari Foundation's educational programmes. Sotheby's did not name the buyer of the custom Luce. The BBC has contacted the aucti...
